Wilburton Parish Council received a grant from the Thalia WB Community Fund (part of the Landfill Communities Fund) to install a two-bay cricket net practice facility on The Rec, the village recreation ground.

Prior to the grant, cricket in Wilburton was thriving. The village club had grown from struggling to field eleven players to running three adult teams and a colts section of around 30 children aged 7 to 13.

But practice facilities had not kept pace with this growth. When surveyed, 95% of the local community felt that the existing nets were not only not fit for purpose but were actively dangerous.

The Parish council, having already raised part of the funding through their own activities, applied to the Thalia WB Community Fund and received a grant of £19,638. This funding has been used to install a Two-lane Cricket Net, and work included:

The new nets fulfill a wide geographical need, with very few open-access, useable nets in East Cambridgeshire, and the nets are enjoyed by other local cricket clubs as well as schools in Wilburton, Haddenham, Stretham, Witchford and Ely.

“

This truly is a formidable asset to improving the cricket provision for our great village club, the village community and neighbouring boroughs.
