Huge heating bills shouldn’t leave anyone out in the cold. That’s why Cambridgeshire Community Foundation is calling on local residents to support its Surviving Winter Appeal – encouraging those who receive the reinstated Winter Fuel Allowance but do not need it to donate it to help vulnerable households stay warm this winter.

Across Cambridgeshire, 32,190 households are living in fuel poverty, according to a recent National Energy Action (NEA) report. This includes:

  • 4,780 households in Cambridge (8.9% of households)
  • 5,977 in Peterborough (11.6%)
  • 3,886 in East Cambridgeshire (10.2%)
  • 5,037 in Fenland (11.2%)
  • 6,501 in Huntingdonshire (8.3%)
  • 6,009 in South Cambridgeshire (8.8%)
CEO Michael O'Toole and President Julie Spence launch the Surviving Winter Appeal with oversized energy bill

Nationally, the NEA estimates 6.1 million UK households are now in fuel poverty, with the average annual fuel bill reaching £1,720 –  almost £500 more than in 2021. Recent polling by YouGov and the NEA reveals that 49% of adults in Great Britain expect to ration their energy this winter, while only 22% say they can comfortably afford their heating bills.

Worryingly, 71% of adults with a heart condition and 64% of those with asthma say they are likely to ration heating this winter. Research shows that being exposed to cold temperatures can make a range of existing health problems worse, such as diabetes, some ulcers, and musculoskeletal or rheumatological conditions (IHE Fuel Poverty report, 2022).
The Surviving Winter Appeal provides vital, practical help for those most at risk – including older people, families with young children, pregnant women, and people living with health conditions.

The Foundation will work with the following partner charities across the county to ensure funds are distributed quickly and effectively: Cambridge Aid, Cambridge City Foodbank, Citizen’s Advice Rural Cambs, Citizen’s Advice Peterborough, Citizen’s Advice Cambridge & District, CHS Advice.

Donations will go directly towards helping with energy costs, such as topping up prepayment meters, covering upcoming gas and electricity bills, or paying for heating oil deliveries – offering immediate relief to households struggling to stay warm.

We believe no one should have to choose between heating and eating, and no-one should be left struggling with huge winter bills. By donating all or part of their Winter Fuel Allowance, those who are able can directly help someone in their community stay warm, safe, and well this winter. Every donation, however large or small, can make a difference to people across our county.
