Cambridgeshire’s mix of busy towns and vast rural areas, including waterways, farmland, and woodland, makes searching for missing people both complex and time critical. Cambridgeshire Search & Rescue (CamSAR) supports around 50 incidents each year, mainly involving high-risk vulnerable individuals such as those with dementia, mental illness, autism, or suicidal thoughts, as well as missing children.

The S2 Community Fund contributed £5,000 towards the purchase of an All Terrain Vehicle, increasing CamSAR’s operational capability by improving their access to remote areas, enabling them to move teams and resources rapidly, and to support medical evacuations in a way that was not previously possible.

Case Study – enhanced capabilities for search and rescue

CamSAR were called out to assist when a vulnerable elderly person with dementia went missing at night. The team worked alongside police and specialist resources, including police helicopter.

Their strategy involved a hasty search and the ATV was deployed to cover ground efficiently in the early stages of the search. Fortunately, CamSAR quickly located the missing person using a handheld thermal imaging scope. After assessing the missing person’s wellbeing, the ATV was used to bring the individual safely back to their care home, providing a secure, comfortable, and dignified means of transport at a time when the person was vulnerable, disoriented, and in need of reassurance.

The ATV ensured:

  • Rapid search capability complementing police resources.
  • The missing person was returned to safety without delay, reducing distress and minimising the risk of harm.
  • Manual handling risks were avoided e.g. using a stretcher
  • Emergency services could be redeployed to other taskings.

This case highlights the critical impact the ATV is having in search operations -both enhancing the efficiency of searches and providing a safe, dignified means of transporting vulnerable people once found.

The Care Home Manager in the case told us: “When one of our residents went missing, CamSAR responded with speed, professionalism, and complete preparedness. Their team arrived with all the necessary equipment and the expertise to manage the situation calmly and effectively. In a very short space of time, our resident was traced and brought back safely. We were deeply impressed by their skill, dedication, and teamwork. Their service not only safeguarded our resident but also gave staff and families great reassurance during a highly distressing moment.”

From an operational perspective, the ATV has transformed how we manage searches. It allows us to deploy teams and equipment into difficult terrain quickly and safely, and provides options for casualty evacuation that we simply didn’t have before. This means we can plan searches more effectively and support the emergency services with greater confidence. It’s a real boost to our overall effectiveness as a team.
