Burwell Print Centre has been providing work experience and enrichment opportunities to adults with additional needs for over 30 years. They support adults with conditions such as Down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, ADHD, epilepsy, and other physical, medical, and neurodevelopmental conditions.

The Print Centre provides training in design, printing, and customer care within a sheltered working environment, with their experienced team of support workers also running a wide range of social activities, including day trips, social events, and crafts.

Facing an increase in core costs, the Print Centre applied for funding through the Burwell and Reach Community Fund. They were awarded a grant of £4,000, which has been used to cover:

  • Electricity costs – to power printers, computers, lighting and heating.
  • Heating – to ensure the building remains warm and safe for their team of adults with additional needs, particularly during colder months.
  • Water supply and wastewater charges.
  • General utility standing charges associated with maintaining the premises.

With printmaking equipment, ventilation systems and the machinery being very energy-intensive, the grant played a crucial role in offsetting rising utility costs.

Core funding provides stability and structure

The grant has made a significant difference to the team working and using the centre, with staff telling us that “consistency and routine are extremely important for our adults with additional needs. Being able to keep the centre open without disruption has provided stability, structure and reliable place where they feel valued, included and supported.”

One of the printers told us “When I started at the print centre, I was very nervous, shy, and reserved as it was a complete change from my normal routine. Now, I am a more outgoing, confident individual who still (at times) gets nervous when meeting new people for the first time, but that soon passes though.”

The funding from the Burwell & Reach Community Fund has not only paid utility bills – it has protected a vital, inclusive creative space where adults with additional needs can develop skills, build confidence, experience a sense of purpose and be active members of their community.

The grant enabled Burwell Print Centre to remain open and fully operational, supporting adults with additional needs in a safe, warm and creative environment.
