Welcome to the first 2010 Grants Bulletin from the Cambridgeshire Community Foundation.
In this Bulletin we have highlighted some of the Funds that are inviting applications over the first quarter of the year and outlined the new approach we are adopting in 2010 to target our grant making to where it is most needed.
We have included highlights of our own grant making stats from 2009 and also given the national perspective to show you how Community Foundations across the country are supporting the voluntary and community sector.
Finally, we bring you news of a new initiative we are supporting which will help local groups raise funds and donations in these challenging times - www.LocalGiving.com. The website allows groups to connect directly with donors. If you want to get involved and you have received a grant from CCF in the last 2 years please drop an email to jane@cambscf.org.uk.
More information about CCF and our all our Funds can be found on our website. You will also find pictures from groups we have funded, details of all the donors we are working with and you can access the online grants application form which is available for the majority of our funds. Applications NOW invited for:

Tidy up with a litter pick grant!
We are running a successful programme to make small grants of up to £250 to community groups who want to organise a litter pick in Cambridgeshire.
So far, we have awarded grants to 10 groups who have collected a total of 110 bags of rubbish along with other items including a bicycle, a fire extinguisher and even a WWI mortar bomb!
We have more money to award, so if your group is planning a litter pick then you could apply for funds to cover the costs of running the event, including buying equipment. We can even help organise collecting your bags of rubbish at the end!
See our website for more information and to apply online.
The 1st Doddington Scouts recruited 50 of their members to help pick up litter around their village. They collected 30 bags of rubbish!
Cambridge City - Grants available for activities that will take place over next 2-3 months
Grants are available to not-for-profit voluntary or community organisations or groups of local residents in Cambridge City for activities to benefit residents living in one of the four areas of Cambridge City. You could apply for funding to:
- Run a community event
- Produce a neighbourhood newsletter

Our New Approach to grant making
In order to clarify to potential applicants the main areas of work we wish to support and to reflect donors’ wishes, in 2010 we will target our main grant making under 5 core programmes:
- Children, young people and families
- Adults facing a life crisis
- Health
- The natural environment
- Community development/engagement
We are working to define a number of themes within each of these programmes. More news on this will follow soon, so keep an eye on our website and in the next Bulletin.
Grants made in 2009 in Cambridgeshire and across the UK by Community Foundations
The latest statistics show that the calendar year 2009 was a successful year for the Cambridgeshire Community Foundation. We awarded almost £950,000 of grant funding to over 530 projects in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
The picture was bright across the whole of the UK, as grants made by all the Community Foundations in the year to 31 March 2009 (these figures have just been collated) amounted to £56 million, with 19,000 separate grants. Over 40% of grants made came from funds from the private sector and across the network 1765 major donors set up new funds in the year.
The interaction we have with other community foundations is important to us as the network is a great source of ideas and information – and we feel that being part of a network enables us to be much stronger in Cambridgeshire.
Make your application to CCF online!
The CCF online application form has been in use since April 2009 and now 70% of our applicants choose to use the online form. We are delighted that so many of you have taken up this option – it means your application goes into our database automatically and we therefore have more time to talk to you, understand your project and think how we can help you. So thanks to all who have gone online and for your feedback. If you have not yet used our online form, then why not have a go when you apply? Remember, even when applying online you can prepare your application in advance, save the form and return to it as many times as you like, and even print a copy to share with your committee before submitting.
We hope you will try the online form and please do not hesitate to contact the CCF team at any time if you have any questions or problems with the online process.
LocalGiving.com provides invited voluntary and community groups with their own fundraising website to attract donations and raise awareness online.
Groups can input text and photos about their activities and funding needs and update these at any time. Online donations from both new donors and existing supporters can be collected through the site and Gift Aid is collected on all donations made through the site, provided the donor makes the online declaration and pays sufficient UK tax.
A full launch of the site on a national basis is planned for the summer of this year and in Cambridgeshire we have been inviting groups to join over the last month. Ten local groups are now live on the site and we plan to get some local publicity from late February. At the moment it is free to sign up but there will be an annual charge of £60 from April 2010 – we hope groups will recover this from donations they receive online. To be eligible to get on the site at this stage you need to have received a grant from CCF in the past two years and to have returned satisfactory monitoring and evaluation information.
If you are interested in participating, please email jane@cambscf.org.uk
The Community Foundation Network
CCF is a member of the Community Foundation Network, the national network linking, promoting and supporting nearly 60 community foundations across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. If you would like to learn more about the network please click on the logo below.
